Red Barrels' upcoming game, The Outlast Trials, is getting closer than ever to its release date. The co-op horror title will officially be available on May 18, but the game will have early access on Steam and the Epic Games Store. The developer didn't specify what the content will be, but it did release a trailer featuring the cast. Check it out below.

The Outlast Trials takes place during the Cold War era, when the Murkoff Corporation recruits “volunteers” to conduct their experiments. These experiments will test players’ actions and intellect, and can be played solo or with friends in up to four players. If you’ve played the previous games, the gameplay mechanics will be very familiar.

Red Barrel Studio has seen a significant increase in the number of developers, doubling the number of developers during the development phase of the second part. Currently, around forty developers are working on The Outlast Trials, while the development team thanked the players for their passion and support for the games and for putting all their focus on the new project.

If the previous games can be compared to the movies, The Outlast Trials is more of a TV series than it seems due to the way the story is presented.

The game is being developed in Unreal Engine 4, which helped “test new ideas and work on them very quickly.”

From the beta experience, it looks like we’re on the cusp of something really good in horror games this year. With it being released as an early access version, we don’t know when we’ll get the full game. The copy could be years away, but we’re expecting it sometime in May. Let me know what you think of the game in the comments section below.
