Sony is exploring a new technology that can track a player's gaze even without a VR headset. The idea of using eye tracking to inform the position of the HUD is something Sony has been researching since at least the PlayStation VR2 development cycle, and it's a machine learning-assisted imaging technology that allows VR headsets to maintain resolution by delivering HD content only to certain areas of the screen that players focus on with their eyes.
This is the second patent for an eye-tracking mechanism that Sony has filed in the past year, although the initial filing was described as being for VR headsets only, but Sony's expansion in this regard will see the technology leveraged for gamers with or without VR headsets.
The recording itself does not imply that this technology will be commercialized. However, it reiterates that Sony is still actively seeking innovations in its games and especially in the area of eye tracking even after virtual reality, which remains an extreme market segment due to its high cost.
Considering the proximity of the launch date of the new generation of the new PSVR 2 virtual reality glasses by Sony, it is assumed that the marketing campaign for the new glasses will begin soon, as Sony recently hired Andrea Perez, a former employee of the marketing team of the famous brand Nike, in order to join the marketing team to promote the PlayStation brand and its products.
We will definitely hear about these technologies sooner or later, as I personally expected after the launch of PSVR 2.
