Whatever we talk about Ubisoft's cancelled titles, there must be something that can never be easily fixed. Of course, I'm talking about the Assassin's Creed series, which Ubisoft stands behind and fixes everything. The company can't easily avoid any part of this for the publisher, because one title in the series equals significant revenue for the publisher.
According to Insider Gaming, Ubisoft is already planning a new installment in the series for VR headsets. The project is codenamed Assassin's Creed Nexus. While Ubisoft has yet to officially confirm the “Nexus” codename, the game was also not announced during the Ubisoft Forward event in September 2022.
The report also gives us a closer look at the development of Project Nexus itself, which was supposed to be exclusive to Meta Quest headsets. According to sources, that deal fell through. That leaves Ubisoft free to publish the game on any other VR headset, but Insider Gaming says it could run into some issues because the deal has some complexities and isn't as easy with the game's progress in fairly steady development.
The Assassin's Creed series is Ubisoft's gold mine, which is probably why it hasn't been affected by any of the recently announced cancellations. But from my perspective, we don't see it as the right time for the publisher to reveal a virtual reality title given the presence of the Mirage title, which has disappeared from the spotlight, and we don't know if it will actually launch this year or not.
