Many of us use gaming appliances because they’re easy to get and use, but have you ever wondered how much power your gaming device uses? How much of the electricity bill that comes home every month and makes your dad mad when you look at it is the device’s share?

Eurogamer, in cooperation with the technical team at Digital Foundry, conducted a comprehensive electricity consumption test of the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch, and the result was as follows:

Power consumption rate of home gaming devices:

Use for one hour PS5
(Model 1000)
Xbox Series X Xbox Series S nintendo switch
Extinguishing mode (OFF) 0.1 watts 0.2 watts 0.2 watts 0.1 – 3.5 W (during charging)
sleep mode 3.3 watts 7.4 watts 7.6 watts 3.5 watts
Standby mode + game download 44.3 watts 28.7 watts 21.7 watts 5.9 watts
Main menu (on hold) 57.4 watts 41.8 watts 28.3 watts 7.8 watts
Watch Netflix 80.0 watts 44.8 watts 44.5 watts unavailable
Overwatch 2 Release 190-220 watts 150-170 watts 65-77 watts 12-19 watts
Cyberpunk 2077 Race
(performance mode)
215-230 watts 170-190 watts 80-84 watts unavailable

From experience, the Digital Foundry technical team has noticed that home appliances consume electricity in OFF mode, as they consume 0.1 watts. Through research, it was found that home appliances continue to consume a very small part of the energy, which does not exceed, at best, 0.5 watts.

In sleep mode, it seems that Xbox Series devices consume more power than other devices, and let's pause here because previously the sleep mode that consumed this power was the same as standby mode, which was called Instant-On.

But since March of this year, 2022, Xbox Series devices offer two sleep modes, one of which is called “power saving” mode. Power saving mode turns off the Xbox hardware almost completely, putting it in a semi-OFF state, consuming 0.2 watts of power. But what many users of the device did not know is that it wakes up once a day to check for updates and then download them if necessary. This increases consumption to twice as much as with other devices.

The PS5 also offers rest mode options. You can choose how long you want it to stay in sleep mode – or whether it wants to provide power via the USB ports and whether it wants to connect to the internet.
