PS5 reaches 2 million copies sold in Japan alone

Sony has just hit a milestone in its home country with 2 million PS5 consoles sold in Japan, and while it's a huge achievement, several drawbacks have slowed sales of the device since its launch.

At this point, Sony has shipped over 20 million PS5 consoles worldwide, although some gamers are still struggling to find one for sale due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, but the PS5 has been successful, just not as easily as the PS4, for example.

According to a report by Famitsu, as of October 23, of those units, less than 300,000 copies were in the digital version, indicating that Japanese gamers still prefer physical games to play their games, while selling 2 million copies is a big deal.

However, the Nintendo Switch remains a dominant force in Japan for this generation of home platforms, as the device sold over 5 million copies in Japan alone in 2021 and has now reached over 111 million copies sold worldwide. Part of this dominance is because the Switch found a foothold before the pandemic began, and because the Nintendo Switch is relatively cheaper than any home platform right now.

Meanwhile, Sony is preparing to launch a new PS5 model that will likely do away with the disc drive, as the cost of production and shipping will be lower. The company is also preparing to ship nearly 30 million units during the new fiscal year of 2023.
