Phil Spencer: Activision Blizzard deal focuses on Candy Crush

Xbox CEO Phil Spencer is making controversial comments again, saying that the tech giant's acquisition of Activision Blizzard is focused on mobile games like Candy Crush and not, in fact, Call of Duty.

In an interview with The Verge's Decoder, president Phil Spencer stated that smartphone gaming has seen a much greater increase in players and sales than home consoles or PCs. He was quick to point out that Xbox has a virtually nonexistent presence in the mobile gaming industry, unlike King, which is owned by Activision Blizzard.

Basically, as mobile gaming grows and home console gaming continues to stagnate, Microsoft's market share will decline. If you're trying to run a global gaming business at scale, you meet your customers where they want to play, and even more so, mobile is where people want to play.

Don't forget that "Phil Spencer" has been facing waves of war of words, mainly from Sony, and this war is related to the future ownership of the Call of Duty title by Microsoft, where "Spencer" said he is ready to sign a ten-year contract to ensure the survival of the title on Playstation platforms. Fortunately, the Activision Blizzard boss is still fighting to complete the acquisition.

Spencer’s statement aligns with what he’s said in the past… In an interview in August, Spencer said that smartphones were and still are “the biggest gaming platform on the planet.” And during October, he hinted that the company plans to put Call of Duty in the Minecraft box. In Microsoft’s filing with the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority, it said the company plans to open an Xbox-branded mobile store.
