Thanks to the release of Shredder's Revenge and The Cowabunga Collection, 2022 has been an exciting year for TMNT fans with premonitions of a big game on the way and with Mutant Mayhem looking like 2023 will be a special year for the title overall. And now publisher Nickelodeon has confirmed that a big game in the series is in development.

One of the most popular Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics of the last decade, The Last Ronin, will be set in the first game, which is apparently inspired by God of War.

The next Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game will take a very different approach than Shredder's Revenge, as it will be based on The Last Ronin, a graphic novel series considered the darkest of all the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles novels, which tells the story of only one surviving turtle.

According to Doug Rosen, vice president of games and media at Paramount Global, TMNT: The Last Ronin will be a third-person action RPG inspired by God of War and God of War Ragnarok. Rosen confirmed that players will primarily play as the "Last Ronin," but there may be some opportunities to play as other characters by remembering one of the turtles in a cutscene.

It looks like we'll be waiting a while to see The Last Ronin. Rosen didn't confirm which studio is currently working on the game, but he did mention that it's been in development for years, and while we don't know who's working on the game, Rosen seemed confident that it's a good game.

Interestingly, last year, a report from Toy World magazine claimed that Nickelodeon was working on a new TMNT game. It appears to be a different project than the one announced today, but there seem to be a lot of fans of the series dying to see something about the game. We're just like them, in fact... waiting.
