Microsoft's deal with Activision has caused a major controversy in the gaming industry, as confidential documents containing publisher Activision's future plans and the titles it intends to release have been submitted to law enforcement agencies. Several encrypted names of the company's titles have been leaked, including important information about the game Call of Duty 2024.

Documents provided to Insider Gaming resulting from Activision's December 4 data breach indicate that Call of Duty 2024, codenamed Cerberus, may release on previous-generation hardware.

Several sources have said that the games in the series will finally end the previous-gen versions with the next installment, which will be released later this year. The source could not delve into the information contained in the documents provided to him, however, references to the presence of Cerberus “codename for the next installment in 2024” can be found on previous-gen consoles.

A bit of credibility can also be added to the above information. Call of Duty now runs on the same engine that is compatible with previous-gen hardware, regardless of which studio is developing it. The current engine is reported to allow for much better and faster game development.

It is not possible to abandon the release of games in the series for the last generation at the moment. The first reason is that there is a large player base that has not yet switched to the new generation. Of course, we will see the acquisition of Activision by Microsoft, which will certainly affect the future of the series.

Microsoft recently struck a series of major deals, one with Nintendo and the other with Nvidia. These deals guaranteed the release of Activision games on those companies' platforms for a period of 10 years, while Sony has turned down that offer more than once.
