The PlayStation 5 defeats the Nintendo Switch for the first time since its launch in Japan.

The Nintendo Switch has dominated the gaming console market in Japan for five years running. But it looks like that could change after PS5 sales surpassed the aforementioned device for the first time. PlayStation 5 sales in Japan have increased dramatically year-over-year thanks to its availability in the market, and there is now no longer a chronic shortage of units.
In February 2023, PlayStation 5 sales increased by 457% in Japan compared to February last year. The device sold 65,772 units in February 2022, but that number increased to 366,982 units in February 2023, according to Famitsu magazine. In fact, the PS5 managed to sell more units last month in Japan than in the first four months combined.
But the real surprise is that Sony managed to beat the Nintendo Switch to become the best-selling console in Japan last month. This is the first time since February 2018 that we haven't seen Nintendo in power.
This is likely due to a 41% drop in Switch sales compared to the same period last year, while in return it witnessed a growth in the production of Sony devices.
PS5 sales also outsold the Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series X|S in the UK and across Europe in February 2023. Sales data has not yet been released for the US, but it will likely follow a similar pattern.
Sony has continued to aggressively promote the PS5 since early this year 2023, which many consider to be the true launch year of the device. While rumors abound about the existence of a new model in production that could be revealed later this year.
These are the positive results that Sony told us last year. Where it said that its device will have a different start globally, starting in 2023. Do you agree with its opinion?
