In conjunction with the launch of the new shooter Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 that was released a few days ago, we share with you the developer's controversial decision about the game requiring you to register your phone number to access the game online.
Just like the recently released free-to-play game Overwatch 2, Modern Warfare 2 requires a valid phone number to confirm permanent login and activation on your Battle.net account. You'll pass your phone number to the account associated with the game.
This new system generated controversy among players at the time, but publisher Activision recently clarified that users of the PC version of the game are concerned about this procedure, and this has nothing to do with users of Xbox and PlayStation home consoles.
Therefore, players playing on PlayStation and Xbox devices will not need to provide a phone number to complete registration and access the game, while PC players will be required to provide a phone number when entering confirmation information to access multiplayer, as confirmed in a blog post. This is the same platform Battle.net first launched on in May 2020, and it will also be expanding to the Steam storefront versions.
These conditions reportedly caused some issues for users when Overwatch 2 recently launched, especially those using prepaid phone lines, as they were unable to complete the registration process and activate two-factor authentication. This led the developer to withdraw the feature for some users.
