While we have received official confirmation of the existence of GTA 6 in development, unfortunately this is all we have received so far, but there are still some informed sources who can share more unofficial information about the game and its engine that always fascinates us, RAGE.
Rockstar uses the RAGE 9 engine, the ninth version of its famous engine, which dazzled us in its previous games, such as GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2. But it seems that we will see more visual effects that will impress us a lot in the next game.
Alex Venturas One of the editors of Rockstar Magazine (unofficial), shared with us, through his Twitter account, some details he obtained from internal sources about the RAGE 9 engine that is used in the development of new Rockstar games, mainly GTA 6.
According to the source, Rockstar is using the ninth version of its Rockstar Advanced Game Engine, which was primarily designed to develop Grand Theft Auto 6.
Venturas based himself on a previous tweet shared by the journalist Chris Klippel He described the new engine as premature and outperforms many modern game engines. Klippel said we shouldn't worry about the quality and power of GTA 6's graphics thanks to this engine.
Venturas attributed the significant development that the RAGE 9 engine will receive to the large revenues that Rockstar has received due to the GTA Online game, as much of that money was used to develop the engine and invest in it directly.
Water in GTA 6 will simulate the physics of CGI scenes
Rockstar recruited engineers with deep knowledge in programming, real-time physics simulation, and an understanding of memory layout considerations, linear algebra, trigonometry, matrix, and quadratic mathematics.
Part of this team of 20 engineers and developers under the name RAGE Technology Group was recruited to work on a new water physics system for GTA VI.
Current video games use a wireframe to render water. This system gives the impression of a wavy liquid, and this system is characterized by being energy-saving in terms of performance. An example of this is GTA 5, which uses the same technology.
But with the new Rockstar RAGE 9 engine, there will be a new system that allows for real-time water simulation. This technology has been used for years in film and 3D CGI design applications, but it is not real-time like in games.
NVIDIA has previously tried using WaveWorks 1.0 and 2.0, but the realism and performance were not usable in video games. Below is a representation in a 3D rendering engine that can give us an idea of the water physics in GTA 6.
Rockstar allocating a special team to work on water physics in GTA 6 could be a clear indication of its great use in the game. There could be missions that are performed underwater or challenges like surfing and so on.
In any case, Take Two confirmed during its earnings call for the current fiscal year that the next installment in the Grand Theft Auto series will represent a quantum leap in the history of the series and, possibly, in the history of video games as well. This is completely in line with what we've learned from the information about the new game engine, in which Rockstar is putting a large part of its investment for the new generation.
At the time of writing, there is no word on when GTA 6 will be revealed or a timeframe for the game's release. Despite talk from some media sources about the possibility of Rockstar revealing the game sometime this year in 2023.
