Google is refunding all Stadia users in preparation for shutdown

Earlier this year, Google announced the disappointing news that the company is preparing to shut down Stadia, as the service will close its doors on January 18, 2023. At that time, no players or subscribers will be able to access its library of games.

The company has confirmed its full willingness to refund all subscription funds and the device itself. Any games and additional content purchased on Stadia will also count towards redemptions. All users of the platform should receive their money starting November 9, 2022, and the company has asked players to be patient, as any contact with customer service will not speed up the refund process.

The company will refund the money in the same way that users paid. In case they are unable to do so, they will attach an alternative method with some instructions in the email so that players can get their money back. Unfortunately, the company was hoping for a good launch and strong popularity in 2019 that would attract a lot of users, but unfortunately that did not happen.

We’ve been hearing rumors of Stadia-exclusive games like Death Stranding 2. Hideo Kojima confirmed his recent rumors of a new Death Stranding installment being exclusive to Google Stadia, and then the game ended up being rejected by Phil Harrison. All of this is “baseless.”

It's good to see a few companies that have announced that they'll help players move all of their purchased titles to Google Stadia, and most notably French developer Ubisoft. If you've purchased your titles on the cloud gaming platform, you'll be able to transfer those purchases and your progress to the PC platform at some point in the future.
