Days Gone's director and writer blamed the lack of success on critics who focused on technical flaws and others who didn't even play the game before writing their reviews.
John Garvin, via his response to a player who apparently enjoyed the game after trying it out recently, on why it wasn't critically acclaimed when it released in 2019.
Garvin categorized the reasons why the game received negative impressions into 3 parts according to his point of view, as follows:
1- The game has technical problems and a drop in frame rate when started.
2- A large number of critics and reviewers who didn't bother to try the game before publishing their reviews.
3- Critics who couldn't control the bike in the game and said it was difficult to ride.
Although Garvin received a lot of support when the game was criticized upon release, his tweet generated a lot of controversy from both fans and opponents.
One of those critics of the director's tweet responded to him and explicitly told him:
Come on John: Are you awake? You're better than this!!
John responded to this follower and said to him:
No, I'm not at all... If a reviewer objects to a character because of identity politics, I call that racist and discriminatory "woke"... How could I be wrong?
The writer means to say “I woke up” with conscience, a word that refers to warning against prejudice and racial discrimination, and social inequality such as sexism, and has been used as shorthand for left-wing ideas involving identity politics and social justice.. such as the idea of white privilege and slavery reparations for Africans.
Some of the responses also referred to the game Red Dead Redemption 2, which contained a lot of racism, sexism, and other scenarios that those accused of being “woke” should consciously oppose. It was released just six months ago and also received an average critic rating of 97 on Metacritic.
John Garvin's theories and claims about the game's poor performance just won't stop, as he previously blamed its poor sales on not enough people buying it at full price.
However, Days Gone received an average rating of 71 from critics on Metacritic, which is considered one of the worst-rated PlayStation titles of all time. Sony's cancellation of the sequel project came as a shock to him and the Bend development team.
It is worth noting that the game Days Gone is considered by many supporters as a game oppressed by the media, and some players also call it a game full of technical errors, and Sony, on the other hand, shows no interest in developing a new part. In the end, the game remains one of the exclusives that provided a distinctive experience, and its sales are not as disappointing as some might think, but it did not live up to Sony's ambition and the ceiling of its well-known games.
