Kojima: New technologies will help shape Death Stranding 2's realism

Kojima Productions seems to want to keep up with cutting-edge technology when it releases games, so it seems that Death Stranding 2 won't surpass the first game. And while it'll be a while before we get specific gameplay details, Hideo Kojima posted some interesting stuff on Twitter.

Something that Kojima Productions seems to be focusing on with Death Stranding 2 is making the CG (images and graphics) more realistic, for which the studio invited Japanese lighting director Mayumi Nishiyama to give a talk. Kojima explained that since the studio only had experience with lighting in a game environment, the development team asked Nishiyama to “show them the basics of live lighting to teach them the technique.”

Actress Shioli Kutsuna, who has been confirmed for Death Stranding 2, served as a model to try out the technique. Kojima said:

It's hard to correctly express Asian skin color, dark hair, and eyes. Shioli's form in DS2 is a challenge for us. We'll be using new technologies that weren't used in the previous game, but first we need to go back to the basics of visuals and start experimenting.

Details about “Death Stranding 2” remain quite hazy, although Kojima has released some information about what we can expect from its story and, interestingly, it has been rewritten from scratch due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Death Stranding 2 is in development for the PS5 platform. The release date has not been officially confirmed, but there is a chance that the game will release next year.
