Here in this long report, we are going to share with you some important details about the history of the series, starting with the first part and ending with the part released in 2018, which is a major turning point in the history of the series.
God of War 2005
At the beginning of the God of War series, Kratos was nothing more than a ruthless killing machine, but in one of the fateful battles that Kratos fights, he is on the verge of defeat and will be eliminated forever. But he cries out at the last moment for help to the god of war “Aris”, who answers him in exchange for giving his life to serve him, and that is what happens.
Kratos dedicated his life to the service of Ares, who gave him the Blades of Chaos, a deadly weapon that was attached to his body by chains wrapped around his arms. Where he used this weapon to eliminate his enemies and cause uncontrolled bloody chaos.
In this way, Ares turns Kratos into a killing machine where he does whatever he is asked to do, while Ares uses him to eliminate everything that can get in his way. One day, Ares asks Kratos to destroy a village that worships a god called "Athena." for him.
While Kratos is outside the village he burned and spilled the blood of its inhabitants, he encounters an Oracle who connects the ashes of his family spilled on his skin to be a curse that haunts Kratos for his life.
This earns him the nickname Ghost of Sparta. Kratos spends the next ten years serving the Olympian gods in hopes of being freed from his nightmare. In the end, Athena gives Kratos one last chance by killing Ares in exchange for Kratos gaining redemption.
In order to kill Ares, Kratos will need Pandora's Chest, which, when opened, will bring tremendous power to Kratos' body. After Kratos finds it, he kills Ares and sends him to the Underworld, where he seeks revenge and fulfills the task entrusted to him by Athena. In the final confrontation, Athena gives him the Blade of Olympus, with which he finally defeats Ares.
Athena tells Kratos that all is forgiven, but the memories and nightmares of his bloody past will remain with him. And so the sad Kratos was crowned the new god of war after his death by Ares.
God of War 2
Kratos becomes vengeful, reckless, brutally exploits his power, and spreads war needlessly. When he joins a battle in the city of Rhodes, Zeus drains Kratos of his divine power, which is then given to a colossal bronze statue. Zeus himself appears to give Kratos the Blade of Olympus and tells him to use his remaining power to defeat the Colossus of Rhodes. After doing so, Zeus reveals his ploy to weaken Kratos, eventually killing him.
Of course, Kratos doesn't actually die. He is saved by Gaia, one of the ancient giants, who explains how Zeus betrayed the giants and tells him that he must find the Loom of Fate to return to the moment when Zeus killed him and get his revenge.
Kratos meets other giants such as Prometheus, Typhon, and Atlas during his search for sisters. Eventually, he finds them and is informed that Zeus destroyed their former home, Sparta. They refuse to help Kratos, as they try to change his fate by making him lose his battle with Ares. But Kratos will not accept this, of course, and he kills them and takes the Loom of Fate.
Kratos travels to face Zeus once more, now backed up with all his strength, and nearly kills him. But Athena intervenes, revealing that Zeus is in fact Kratos' father.
Using the Loom of Fate for the last time, Kratos travels back to the time when Zeus defeated the giants. He rescues them and brings them back to the present, and they all head towards Olympus, where we have an epic finale.
God of War 3
Kratos has become angry with all the Greek gods, some of whom have betrayed him while others have lied to him. In alliance with the giant TITANS at his side, he wages war on the remaining gods, defeating Poseidon with the help of Gaia. Zeus intervenes in an attempt to stop invaders from ascending his mountain. Gaia then reveals that she is not a true ally of Kratos, and that she was only using him to exact revenge on the gods. And here Kratos falls back into the underworld.
There, he encounters the spirit of Athena, who tells him that the only hope is to overthrow the gods and extinguish the flames of Olympus. Using the recovered Blade of Olympus, Kratos kills Hades, escapes the Underworld, and begins a bloody rampage that leads to the deaths of the entire Greek pantheon.
With Pandora's help, the Flame of Olympus is extinguished, and the only thing left is to defeat Zeus. During the battle, Gaia appears to try to eliminate the two, but Kratos ends up outsmarting the deceived giant and his father. Athena appears again and tells him that opening Pandora's box to kill Ares unleashed an evil that infected the rest of the gods, and that he needs to restore her power so that she can restore order.
Of course, Kratos doesn't trust Athena, refuses to cooperate with her, and instead stabs himself with the Blade of Olympus and gives up his powers. This brings back the Greece that was suffering after all this chaos. But Kratos apparently didn't die, as there is a post-game cutscene where his body disappears.
God of War 2018
The game is the eighth game in the God of War series and is a sequel to the events after God of War III released in 2010. Unlike the previous installments, which were primarily based on Greek mythology, this game is primarily inspired by Norse mythology, and revolves around most of what happens in the ancient kingdom of Midgard.
For the first time in the series, there are two protagonists: Kratos, the former Greek god of war who remains the only playable character, and his son Atreus. After the death of Kratos' second wife – Atreus' mother – the two travel to fulfill her request to scatter her ashes on the highest peak in the Nine Realms.
Meanwhile, Kratos keeps his troubled past a secret from his son Atreus, who is also unaware of his divine nature. During their journey, they encounter monsters and gods in the Norse world.
Many years after defeating the Olympian gods, Kratos now lives with his son Atreus in the realm of Midgard. After the body of his second wife Faye is cremated, Kratos encounters a stranger with godlike powers. A bloody battle ensues between them, ending with Kratos' victory. After this, Kratos and Atreus begin their journey to honor Faye's final wish.
Upon reaching the Lake of Nine, the serpent couple encounter Jormonander, the last remaining giants. On their journey, they find their path blocked by an impenetrable black fog; the witch appears and instructs them to use Bifröst to travel to Alfheim and protect its magical light to extinguish the fog.
When they reach the top of Midgard, they overhear a conversation between the stranger—who then turns out to be Baldur—and his two nephews, Moody and Magni, and the imprisoned Mimir. After they leave, Kratos confronts Atreus Mimir, who reveals to them that the highest peak is in Jötunheim, but giants block the way to travel there to keep Odin and Thor away from it.
While searching for ingredients to open the Gate of Jötunheim, Kratos, Atreus, and Mimir are attacked by Modi and Magni. After Kratos kills Magni, Modi, who later ambushes the Trio, escapes while Kratos manages to hold him off, but Atreus collapses and falls ill when Freya intervenes to help him. Freya revives Atreus and tells him that they are gods. Atreus becomes extremely arrogant and, against Kratos' orders, kills the weak Modi, who is beaten by his father Thor for not avenging Magni's death. At the summit of Midgard, Kratos and Atreus are ambushed by Baldur, destroying the Gate of Jötunheim. Their battle continues to the Temple of Týr and the group ends up in Helheim after Kratos opens its gate with Bifröst.
They then fulfill their promise and scatter Fei's ashes on top of it. Kratos then reveals to Atreus that his given name was that of a fellow Spartan. Back on Midgard, when they retrieved Mimir, he warned them that Baldur's death had caused the start of the three-year Fimbulwinter event, with the Battle of Ragnarök soon to follow.
