New reports indicate that The Coalition is now putting all of its focus on Gears 6, after two other unannounced projects were canceled.
During Thursday's Game Mess Mornings, a Giant Bomb reporter stated Jeff Group Canadian Xbox Studio is now fully operational on Gears 6.
Coalition said in May 2021 that it was preparing to transition to developing next-gen projects using Unreal Engine 5. Shortly after, a LinkedIn profile for one of the studio's level designers revealed that they were working on an entirely new title.
Grubb claims the studio was working on two now-cancelled projects, in addition to doing support work for Halo Infinite and working with Epic on developing a tech demo for The Matrix Awakens using Unreal Engine 5.
They cancelled this little project, as well as another one, so a few games there.
All of this has been reflected in the layoffs at Microsoft, which has hit The Coalition a bit. The studio is now going to move entirely onto Gears 6. And I would say now, they probably moved onto Gears 6 entirely last year, but that's definitely going to be their next game.
According to Microsoft, the Gears of War series had sold more than 22 million units and generated more than US$1 billion when the company acquired the rights to the title from Epic Games in 2014.
Since purchasing the title, Xbox has released two major sequels, Gears of War 4 in 2016 and Gears 5 in 2019, both developed by The Coalition, as well as Gears of War: Ultimate Edition and Gears Tactics.
If Gears 6 has been in development for a long time, it's likely that Microsoft will reveal it during the Xbox event scheduled for June, coinciding with E3 2023.
