Christopher Slayton, 18, spent over 2 months exploring the wonders of space and then recreating them using only materials and Minecraft mods. He shared the results of his work on his YouTube channel ChrisDaCow.
Since posting on Reddit's r/Minecraftbuilds, Slayton's video has garnered over 3.7 million views and over 228,000 subscribers.
The video begins by describing Slayton’s hands-on approach to gathering information. The author told the New York Times that the journey from an idea to a finished recreation of the universe made him “…even more aware of how beautiful it is.”
One of Slayton’s many challenges along the way was finding a realistic way to recreate the behavior of light in space and then apply it to his newly constructed celestial bodies. Slayton used a variety of Minecraft mods, including World Edit, galaxy texture packs, Distant Horizons, Optifine, and other tools to create the desired look and lighting effects.
Slayton plans to continue developing complex Minecraft creations. Minecraft enthusiasts can find more information and download Slayton's builds, including the universe, on his Patreon page.
