Hopes are high for The Last of Us, HBO's upcoming exclusive, not just because it's based on a popular video game, but because it feels like a faithful game.

The audience at CCXP Brazil went wild after watching the first trailer for the series, raising the bar even higher. The series stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as Joel and Ellie. The story is written by the writer and director of the original game Neil Druckmann. The series is directed by Craig Mazin. In a new interview with Empire Magazine, Mazin talked about his expectations for the upcoming series and also revealed an exclusive photo.

Most video game adaptations in the past have failed to live up to fans’ expectations, with the exception of a few like Sonic or Arcane. The prevailing theory is that successful video game novels aren’t enough to raise expectations for a new movie or TV series in the genre. Still, as an avid gamer, Craig Mazin feels that The Last of Us is “an open case, this is the greatest story ever told in a video game.”

A new image shows Joel shielding Ellie from danger as the two are seen in a warehouse. Hope against 'Cordyceps', a fungus that infects humans. It turns them into zombie-like creatures called Clickers.

What's certainly unique about the series is the human element, so it's clear that we'll see The Last of Us with a completely new look.
