Steam Deck Designers Aim to Design a New Console

While the Steam Deck has been a hugely successful hardware device for Valve, the company appears interested in revisiting some of its older attempts at gaming accessories, most notably the Steam Controller.

In an interview with The Verge, Steam Deck lead designers Lawrence Yang and Pierre-Loup Griffis spoke about their desire to explore the possibility of a Steam 2 console.

“Yes, we want to make it happen,” Yang said when asked if a new Steam console could happen. “It’s just a question of how and when.” However, the company itself is still focused on the Steam Deck.

I think we should probably explore that because it’s something we wanted to do as well. Right now, we’re focused on our last platform, so it’s like asking about a new platform. It’s definitely something that we’re excited about and that will help us explore ourselves.”

While this seems far from an official confirmation that Valve may be working on new hardware, it's possible that the company has made some progress prototyping new, unknown parts. Whether or not we'll see these prototypes turn into a full product launch is a question that could take a few years to answer.

If you're wondering about the platform's success, Cyberpunk 2077 has become one of the most played titles on the Steam Deck mobile platform, in terms of number of hours played, in which the game has taken an advanced position ahead of other titles that have had great success at launch and sales, such as the Souls game Elden Ring, which achieved impressive success when it was launched on the other platforms during the month of February, and even won Game of the Year at the Game Awards.
