God of War Ragnarok developer comments on players' irritation with allies

God of War Ragnarok developer Santa Monica Studio, through its lead writer and director, commented on the principle that players get angry with allies in the game.

God of War Ragnarok's director and lead writer, Richard Sophos and Matt Sophos, respectively, were interviewed by MinnMax. During the interview, it was mentioned that players were annoyed with in-game allies revealing puzzle solutions to the player too early. This was ruining the players' enjoyment and making it difficult to solve the puzzle before they had even thought about it.

The aforementioned team members said they were unaware of the matter, and were even surprised by the players' reactions. Both said the following:

"We didn't really find out until after the game was released, because even during testing, we never saw any comments about characters talking too much or spoiling things too quickly. The timing of the first hint was very annoying, and it should have taken longer to count down before something appeared."

Both members of the development team said they knew about this issue after the game's release, and if they had known in advance, they would have fixed it. They also promised not to do it again.

Kratos's background characters truly help the player from the very beginning, when he encounters a rather confusing puzzle. But in some missions, even when you receive help, you have some difficulty understanding what the character is trying to say.

Additionally, during the same meeting, it was acknowledged that Kratos' fate was different in the initial version of the game—he was supposed to die, but the scenario, which wasn't approved by the game director, was changed with some modifications that were ultimately cut from the game. More details can be found in our new report here.

In any case, the game is scheduled to receive New Game Plus in a special update expected this spring. Will you try to finish it again?
