Developer Crystal Dynamics announced today that the Marvel's Avengers game designer will no longer be a spokesperson for the studio.
Brian Wagoner works as a systems designer for the game and held that role until January 2022 when he took over as the game's lead content designer, however, a series of offensive tweets that Wagoner previously posted were brought back to the spotlight this past weekend, causing him to be removed from his role and issuing an apology.
Following this verbal skirmish, the studio stated on Twitter that as a result of Waggoner's somewhat blunt tweets, he would no longer be serving in his previous role as a spokesperson for the game and the studio. Crystal Dynamics.
The tweets were originally taken offline after being completely deleted from Twitter, but were reposted by other users and included a racist comment made in 2014, some abuse against people with disabilities in 2010, and many other questionable comments.
Wagoner tweeted on Tuesday: “Over the weekend, old tweets I wrote before my time at Crystal came to light, I apologize and take full responsibility for the pain I have caused my followers, the community, and those I work with.
Brian added that since he posted this content, which he feels has hurt people's feelings, he feels sad about reposting such abuse, and all of this does not fully reflect who he is today, his thinking and his mindset.
The following statement from Crystal Dynamics Studio:
It’s terribly disappointing to see language and perspectives from staff that don’t align with our studio’s values. We apologize to our community and coworkers who were genuinely upset by the content. Brian is no longer a studio spokesperson or point person for studio projects.
Of course, the studio wants to give this position to someone who is completely sane and free from any confusion or mistakes that may occur in the future.
