The PS5 version of Pentiment supports 120 frames per second, unlike the Xbox Series

Several days ago, it was officially announced that the game Pentiment, one of the illustrious exclusives of the Xbox series, would arrive on the competing platform PS5.

There is no doubt that Pentiment is not one of the titles that relies heavily on the frame rate, but one of the users in the Reddit community made an interesting discovery that caused some controversy, confirming that when the game is played on PS5, 120Hz mode is activated on the TV automatically.

As we know, the refresh rate in hertz (hz) is different from the number of frames per second (fps), but the PS5 only activates this mode if the game is programmed to run in high frame rate (HFR) mode or in the 40 fps mode found in some games.

The user was unable to check the FPS count on the TV, but the game appears to be running in HFR mode at over 60+ FPS, which equates to 120 FPS, and this user was hoping that Digital Foundry would do a technical analysis for the game and confirm the number of frames per second it runs at, you might be wondering why all the Xbox versions only run at 60 frames per second.

To confirm this, the user recorded a slow-motion video of the game, running back and forth as the screen moved. He did this with 120Hz mode automatically enabled and 60Hz mode (with 120Hz disabled), as 120Hz mode looked smooth on the screen. Slow but choppy appeared in 60Hz mode.

One Reddit user is now pretty confident that the game actually runs at 120fps on the PS5 (or at least above 60fps).

From our point of view, this is not a major issue and a difference in such a game, but at least it means that Microsoft is not slowing down its games on competing platforms like the PS5, and now we are really looking forward to knowing how the Hi-Fi Rush and Sea of Thieves games perform on the Sony platform, so that it can achieve better or at least equal performance.

For those unfamiliar with Pentiment, it is a narrative adventure and RPG game developed by Obsidian Studios, a subsidiary of Microsoft Studios. The game is currently scheduled to be released for Xbox and PC on the Game Pass service.
