With the dawn of the new millennium, Rockstar was poised to release a wrestling game around the year 2000 (that's back in time for the planned release). The wrestling game in question would be ECW rather than the WWE wrestling games that were popular at the time.
Hard4Games recently shared this information with us on YouTube, where they posted a video showcasing a pre-alpha prototype of ECW Hardcore Revolution's Project Rockstar. The video also features an interview with Tommy Dreamer, one of ECW's shining stars.
At the time of the game's development, ECW wrestling was at the height of its popularity at the turn of the new millennium, and wrestler Tommy Dreamer revealed that before he struck a deal with Acclaim in 1999 to create an ECW game, he already had an agreement with Rockstar to create another game with it.
It was a great time in the wrestling industry. Video games were key to its success as a wrestling company, and we had many companies bidding on this game. I'll tell you an interesting fact that I mentioned, but I don't know if many people noticed. There was a fan who worked for this company and he wanted ECW to be a box office success.
One of the most important people on Rockstar's production team at the time was Kevin Gill, who told his story of how the project ultimately failed. The reason, of course, is that he was unsure of the game's long-term lifespan.
While Dreamer and Kevin's stories confirm that Rockstar was on the verge of making an ECW wrestling game, they provide reasons why they're far from certain. Wrestler Dreamer claims Rockstar is waiting to see how successful GTA is, and Kevin Gill states he's unsure about ECW's longevity.
