After a year of hard work and just days before release, Capcom released an unofficial player-made remake of Code Veronica. The remake garnered a lot of attention and became popular among fans of the game and the series in general.
The team behind the unofficial remake of RE Code Veronica announced via Discord that their project has been canceled by Capcom. The company's argument was to use the series' exclusive branding in addition to the characters. They also stated that this unofficial game project could lead the gaming community to believe it's official when it's not.
Not content with that, the company also took down the Team Project website. When you visit, a message appears saying, "Capcom has canceled our project." Here's what the team said after the cancellation:
Unfortunately, Capcom contacted us and canceled our projects. We're deeply saddened to inform you that they canceled it out of pure malice, as there's no sign of an official release coming from them.
The team has several other projects underway, including Resident Evil Remake. As we can see below, the project uses a highly advanced version of the Unity graphics engine and is expected to be released for the PC platform next year.
Do you think Capcom is right to unofficially abandon player-generated projects? But does pursuing such projects mean the aforementioned remakes are officially in development? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
We remind you that the company currently has a RE4 Remake game project in development and is leading next year.
