Ukraine's Ministry of Digital Transformation has decided to take action against the recently released game Atomic Heart, saying it will contact Valve, Sony and Microsoft to virtually remove the game from digital stores in the region and not sell it at all.
Authorities have encouraged players from other countries to boycott the game due to its developers' stance on the ongoing Russian invasion and other controversies surrounding the project in general. Alex Borniakov Ukraine's Deputy Minister of Digital Transformation said the ministry will send an official letter to Valve, Sony and Microsoft to completely ban the sales of Atomic Heart in Ukraine.
According to dev.ua, the reason behind this decision is that developer Mundfish has not released any public statements condemning Russia's war on Ukraine, saying only that the studio is a "pro-peace organization" and will not comment on the current politics between the two countries.
The minister encourages players around the world to boycott the game if it supports Ukraine. Borniakov also noted that according to some sources, Mundfish has been funded by “sanctioned Russian companies and banks” to continue developing the game, but there is no solid evidence of any contact between the developers and the Russian government at the moment.
With all these accusations, Mundfish revealed that they had several developers from Ukraine who participated in the creation of the game that is currently available on Steam with Ukrainian subtitles. The game seems to be in an unfortunate position after middling reviews that are largely disrespectful towards the game itself.
The action shooter Atomic Heart takes place in a futuristic simulated Soviet era, or as described by the developer as an alternate reality during the year 1955, where technologies such as the Internet, holograms, and robots have already been invented. These technologies take place within a group of factories in the Russian Republic, where a group of scientists have invented techniques that allow them to fully control robots.
You will play as the main character of the game Major Nechaev or “P-3” a hybrid human officer with artificial intelligence, and you have been sent by the genius scientist Dmitry Sechenov In order to investigate the robot attack on the giant facility. Then you will have a key role in uncovering the threads of this conspiracy within dummy installation Facility 3826.
