Sony will carefully monitor PlayStation 5 sales
According to the journalist's translation Genki_JPN Interested in covering gaming news, Sony Corporation's Chief Financial Officer Hiroki Totoki said the following during the current fiscal year's third-quarter earnings call:
Also in the US, in the summer there was some narrowing of the gap between PS5 and its peers, but recently our share has increased significantly…. However, this remains variable, so we have to watch the situation carefully from Q4 onwards.
Sony has announced sales of the PlayStation 5, which, according to the latest statistics, totaled 32.1 million units as of the end of last December.
These statistics indicate that the company managed to ship 7.1 million units in the last three months, double the amount shipped in the same period last year, which was 3.1 million units.
Despite this large number, the PlayStation 5 still lags behind the PlayStation 4 in terms of sales during the same fiscal year period since launch.
Recently, Sony’s new device has witnessed a good flow in global markets, thanks to the success of Sony’s plan to improve production line and shipment. As it managed to double the quantities shipped to global markets in the same period last year.
This upward trend in device sales is expected to continue throughout this year and into next year, as Sony expects to sell over 33 million units during the 2023-2024 fiscal year.
On the other hand, Xbox devices have witnessed a notable drop in sales, according to recent statistics from Microsoft. The Xbox gaming division reported a 13% drop in revenue in the last three months ended December 31, 2022, compared to the same period last year. More details can be found here.
