From the outset, it was announced that the Resident Evil 4 Remake would be released exclusively on next-gen platforms, while this time it would avoid the last-gen PS4 and Xbox One. But in a surprising move, Capcom partially reversed this decision, with the exception of its release on Sony's previous device.
Of course, this decision was made entirely with the goal of taking advantage of the platform's huge audience, which will make a big difference in the game's sales when it officially launches on Friday.
But on the other hand, there will be a major effort to completely reset Resident Evil 4 Remake on the hardware of Sony's older device. And the mission may already have been successful, but to what extent and which features remain supported in the game, and which features have been abandoned, remains to be seen.
In this report, we'll take you through an in-depth look at some of the technical reviews the game has received on PS4 and how it compares to the PS5 version.
What is Resident Evil 4 Remake like on PS4?
First and foremost, we want to assure PlayStation 4 owners that the game looks very good, both in terms of performance and graphical quality. And if you're one of those players who cares more about the gameplay and following the story's events than about the quality of the graphics and effects, then we think you'll enjoy the game to the fullest.
The game offers two game modes, the first is Precision Mode and the other is Performance Mode and looking at some comparisons, the PS4 version still maintains the graphics quality and performance to a great extent.
In the video above, you can see that, for the most part, the PS4 version of the game appears to run similarly to the PS5 version. The difference mostly stems from things that are difficult to spot unless seen only through comparison videos.
In this case, the PS5 version offers higher fidelity rendering and wall designs, improved shadow quality, and overall more stable performance. On the PS4 version, some effects like depth of field and motion blur run at lower quality than on the PS5 version, while resolution is generally improved compared to the upscaled 4K on the PS4 Pro.
What about performance?
The game runs at 30fps in Resolution mode on PS4 and 60fps in Performance mode. And while Performance mode runs at dynamic 4K on PS5, it drops to 1080p on PS4 and PS4 Pro.
Additionally, one of the differences you'll miss in the PS4 version is the game's ray tracing support, as well as the precision hair detail found on the PS5, Xbox Series, and PC versions. Obviously, this won't be available in the previous-gen version for technical reasons.
Ultimately, we think Resident Evil 4 Remake works very well on PS4. It can be embraced as a complete experience if you haven't yet upgraded to any of the next-gen platforms.
