The name of Japanese publisher Square Enix has long been associated with rumors about Sony's desire to acquire it, especially with the acquisition of much of Square Enix's Western studios by the giant Embracer Group.
Japanese company Square Enix announced its financial figures for the first nine months of its current fiscal year, showing a decline in revenue and profits year-over-year. According to the data I shared, the company's revenue totaled approximately US$1.99 billion, a decrease of US$6.61 billion year-over-year. Operating profit was US$321.2 million, a decrease of US$17.61 billion year-over-year.
In the video game segment, the "entertainment segment," revenue fell 12.91 TQ3 and profits fell 21.61 TQ3 year-over-year. The only explanation for this noticeable decline is that the company didn't release any games this fiscal year to rival NieR Replicant, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, and Outriders, released in the previous fiscal year. Meanwhile, Final Fantasy 14 continues to post strong profits for the company.
However, the company plans to release several titles in the future, including Final Fantasy XVI, Rebirth, and KINGDOM HEARTS IV, and recently released Forspoken, which doesn't seem to generate enough money for the developer and publisher combined.
Sincerely, fans of games like Octopath Traveler, Xenogears, and many other 2D games are in a meeting with publisher Square Enix to re-release many titles in the HD-2D style in the future. To learn more, click here.
