The gaming community is still waiting for the final verdict on Microsoft's acquisition of Activision, but the producer of the Dragon Age game has his own expectations about the impact of the deal on the gaming industry in the future.
Producer Mark Darrah, who previously worked on Dragon Age under Bethesda, has given his opinion on the biggest deal in the gaming industry. Mark said that Microsoft's acquisition of Activision will benefit the latter, but in the short term, not in the long term.
Mark stated that the only benefit to Activision from this acquisition would be to change the management that was previously accused of verbal and sexual harassment. As for the long term, he stated the following, citing TweakTown:
I can say that consolidation is probably a bad thing in the long run.
Hopefully buying Activision will be a good thing in the short term, because culturally it seems like the company needs someone to clean up the corners of what the previous management did.
But long-term consolidation is generally a bad thing because when you have enough control, you start wanting to control costs, and that usually means creativity goes down, risk goes down.
We would like to remind you that only one official party has approved the acquisition deal, which is the Brazilian Commission. It remains to obtain approvals from three other official bodies, including the British and European ones.
This deal caused widespread controversy in the gaming industry for several reasons, the most important of which is its huge cost of approximately $ 70 billion. Additionally, the issue of limiting the acquired company's games to one platform caused Sony to intervene to try to prevent the deal from happening.
If the acquisition is completed, Microsoft will become the owner of two major gaming companies with all their studios. Do you think, our followers, that the deal can be completed and, more importantly, that Microsoft will deliver on its promises to gamers and other competing companies not to limit gaming?
