After sales of the console fell due to parts and supply shortages globally for nearly two years, the PS5 has seen significant increases in shipments and sales in recent times, with Sony confirming that the aforementioned shortages are beginning to ease. It’s no surprise that this is reflected in the numbers from one of the countries that consumes the most PlayStation products.
In fact, according to data published by GamesIndustry, the PS5 platform saw a 316% increase in sales in the UK in the month of February compared to what we saw from January to February 2022.
We started last month with a 27% increase in sales compared to what we saw in January, while last month’s sales in the region were up 65% compared to February 2022. Platform sales are up 180% in the first two months of 2022. Sales so far total an increase of 316% compared to the same period last year.
At the same time, the Xbox Series X/S also saw an increase in sales in the UK, but not to the same extent. Sales of Microsoft platforms increased in February by 21% compared to the previous month and by 15% compared to February last year, despite the relative drop in sales since the beginning of the year to date of 5.3%.
This is because Microsoft has not had the same recovery as Sony in terms of parts and supplies. Last month, Sony confirmed that the PS5 platform has sold more than 32.1 million units worldwide.
Recently, and through one of the sessions with investors, AMD, specialized in manufacturing chips and processors, revealed that Sony has become one of its largest customers and is responsible for 16 to 20% of the company's total financial return.
According to the revealed figures, Sony has purchased over US$1.776 billion worth of electronic chips to produce the PlayStation 5 alone. While the company has confirmed that these figures continue to grow over time.
Sony's exclusives over the last few years, most notably God of War Ragnarok, seem to have a very distinct factor in the decision to buy the device. Don't forget that we're about to face the Spider-Men again in Spider-Man 2 this fall, with Wolverine set to release next year. We're also months away from Final Fantasy 16, a PS5 exclusive.
