Yakuza Like A Dragon Producer Revealed Masayoshi Yokoyama The famous manga and anime One Piece was one of the biggest inspirations for the game, and its character set is based on Luffy and his crew.
In an interview with Crunchyroll, he said Yokoyama Game producer and studio head Ryu Ga Gotoku said that the long-running manga and anime series was on his mind throughout the process of writing the story for Yakuza Like A Dragon, as he said it should be called Yakuza One Piece because the game was so inspired by the manga.
In fact, anyone who has already experienced the current seventh part will conclude that there is a great connection between the characters in the story and the characters in the manga, as Yokoyama said:
I haven't really talked about this before, so I'm not sure if I should talk about it now, but as for [Like A Dragon] I was really inspired by One Piece.
For me, the main character Ichiban is basically Luffy. And around him are mainly Zoro, Nami, and the rest of the crew. The One Piece squad was so much in my mind while writing that it had a huge impact.
It's definitely not official, but in my heart, the game was basically my perfect version of what Yakuza: One Piece could be, so I was inspired to make it.
This mentioned part is the last major part released in the series now, as the studio announced last month the eighth part and a bunch of other subparts, with the exception of the Yakuza name of them, as we explained earlier.
