Legendary film director John Carpenter reiterated his desire to make a Dead Space film. Speaking to the AV Club, (opens in new tab)Carpenter discussed adapting EA's horror series after being asked if there were any games he would consider turning into films.
"The only one I can think of, and I've mentioned it before, is Dead Space," Carpenter told the AV Club's William Hughes. "That would make a great movie. I could do that."
As Carpenter's statement implies, this isn't the first time the director has talked about making a Dead Space movie. He's previously mentioned the idea. (opens in new tab) to Game Informer in 2013, stating that "Dead Space would make a great movie because you have these people getting into an abandoned, decommissioned spaceship and they have to start it, and something's on board. It's all great stuff." An avid gamer in general, Carpenter is a big fan of Visceral Games' sci-fi horror trilogy. When asked by AV Club which Dead Space game was his favorite, the director replied, "Well, any of them were pretty good. I even like the last one, the action one that nobody else liked."
Carpenter hasn't directed a feature film since 2010's The Ward, explaining Collider (opens in new tab)in 2019 that he “burned himself out.” But he has spoken more recently about returning to (opens in new tab) making a movie. A Dead Space film would be a fitting return, as the series is partly inspired by Carpenter's work on The Thing, particularly with regard to the game's hostile, mutated Necromorphs.
In addition to raving about Dead Space, Carpenter also discussed the games he's playing this year, stating that he's "hooked" on Fallout 76. (opens in new tab)"I know there were bugs, and a lot of them have been squashed, but I thought it was great." He pointed to the games' open world of "roaming" as a major factor in its appeal. "That's what I love about Fallout. There's a template to follow. There are quests, but you can do them differently. And they keep coming up with new quests every now and then, and new ideas. It's good. It's really interesting."
