There are VR headsets that will kill you in the real world if you die in the game

In a new blog post by Palmer Lucky, Lucky discusses his new project inspired by the Japanese series Sword Art Online, where “the game can only be escaped after completion” and the glasses cannot be removed. And if a player dies in the game, the glasses, called NerveGear, will send radiation to their brain that will kill them in real life.

Palmer Lucky claims to have done something very similar. The killer sensors don’t work in real life without attaching the headset to large equipment, so Lucky says instead of using three explosive units or something, the glasses were attached to a “photosensor” that was matched to a specific frequency of flashes that illuminated a red light.

These flashes… it’s easy for the developer to adapt to any game on the screen. And when this screen appears it indicates that the player is lost and the sensors are activated. The charges are fired and the player’s brain is instantly destroyed.

Lucky says the glasses aren't finished yet for one reason: the near-perfect virtual reality presented in Sword Art Online's story is still "many years away." But he also plans an "anti-mistake mechanism" that would make it impossible to remove the glasses.

The system has not yet been physically tested. This is because there are a wide variety of errors that can occur and kill the user at the wrong time.

Personally, I hope this invention leads us down an evil path. But glasses like this are sure to cause a lot of controversy around the world when they are released.
