Last week, EA and Criterion Games officially announced Need for Speed Unbound and released a teaser trailer for the project. At the time, many fans of the series were upset by the cartoonish graphics shown in the trailer. Now, the developers have shared more details about the new art style and also showed a new trailer – now with gameplay elements.
In Need for Speed Unbound, car customization is once again receiving a lot of attention, as it was in some previous installments of the franchise. In addition to the usual huge variety of parts and options, the developers have introduced collectible liveries that can be applied to cars and even removable parts. This will allow players to show off the mechanical innards of their vehicles by removing the external surfaces.
Additionally, the studio is introducing labels as a completely new way to customize gameplay. These new graffiti-inspired patterns appear when accelerating. They’re “dramatic, customizable effects that paint the world around you, including illustrative lines etched into the curves of your vehicle.”
“The realistic world and cars in Need for Speed Unbound really help solidify the look,” says art director Darren White of the new art style. “Inspired by street art and other media, we creatively subverted characters and visuals into expressionistic illustrations of ‘you’ and ‘your actions.’ It’s literally ‘animated graffiti.’”
For those who didn't appreciate the developers' artistic delights, Criterion Games has provided the ability to disable these effects completely.
Need for Speed Unbound will be released on December 2 for PC, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. Pre-orders are available now starting at £1,699.
