There's not much time left until the highly anticipated release of Spider-Man 2, which will bring together two spiders in one game for the first time. Today we learn more about the game, specifically about the character Venom and how he was made, as well as revealing a new image from within the game.
Spider-Man 2 director Brian Anthar gave a new interview to Entertainment Weekly about Venom in particular, how he was created, and how he's the third Spider-Man character outside of the Spider-Man title.
Insomniac Games kept its promise when it said it would reveal more information about the game at Comic Con. In fact, priority was given to the WE team, to whom the director revealed he was apprehensive about casting Venom in the game because he was well-known in the community and his story had become saturated.
As for why voice actor Tony Todd was chosen to play the character of Venom, Brian mentioned that he was impressed with the actor's performance in the 2021 film Candy Man and thought he was the best choice to play the symbiote character in the upcoming game. He continued:
“Everything we talked about with Venom, that sense of power, that sense of fear, that sense of exhaustion, which is so different from other characters, is embraced in the performance of the character.”
Director Bryan also spoke about Todd's performance, saying it helped the team "feel more confident" in creating the character. He continued:
“For us, Venom is both the host and the symbiote. You wouldn’t get Venom without the two coming together. What Tony represents is that bond. I think casting Tony made us feel more confident in the visual design of the character.”
The director also talked about how the team at Insomniac wanted to do something different than what they did with Doc Ock in the first game. According to him, Venom fits that bill. He said they wanted to try something completely different, since it's about power, it's about being insulted, and also Peter being much more involved in the creation of Venom than he was when he helped create Doc Ock from the first installment.
The game will be released on October 20th, exclusively for the PS5.
