During an exclusive interview today, director Hideo Kojima confirmed that the Death Stranding movie, based on the events of his latest game, will not have a budget as big as is the case with Hollywood films.
During the Video Game Awards event earlier this month, Kojima confirmed that the film is in production, as well as announcing the second part of the famous game.
Death Stranding will be financed by Hammerstone Studios, while Kojima and Alex Leibowitz will produce.
During an interview with IGN, Kojima stated:
I've been video calling a lot of people in Hollywood every week for the past year, and not just for Death Stranding, I've had a lot of offers, but my intention from the beginning was never to make a blockbuster. Alex Lebovici from Hammerstone Studios shared my thoughts on this.
There have been many offers to make a big movie with big name actors and flashy explosions, but what's the point of explosions in Death Stranding? Making money isn't something I'm focused on either. I'm looking for a more exciting approach, and the only person who's offered to make a movie like this is Alex Lebovici, which makes me think it would be a pretty unusual experience.
Kojima also spoke about the film's characters, confirming that he had not decided whether to cooperate with big actors like the game's hero, Sam Brewer Bridges.
We haven't decided on that yet. The failure of a lot of game movies a while back led to a lot of gamer-oriented movies, right? That's why it feels the same as the game. I don't want Death Stranding to be like that. Instead, I'm taking the approach of changing and evolving the world of Death Stranding in a way that fits well with the movie.
I made Death Stranding a game, and games are games. There's no real need to turn them into movies. In a way, Death Stranding is taking a direction that no one has tried before, turning games into movies. I think I need something that will inspire some of the people who watch it to be creative 10 or 20 years later.
Kojima also spoke during the same meeting about his unusual game, which is being developed in cooperation with Microsoft, and you can see the details in our new report here.
