Microsoft has confirmed that the support message warning players that the Xbox 360 Games Store will be shutting down was simply a technical error.

It all started when someone on Reddit discovered that when searching the Xbox support pages for news of store updates, one of the search results showed a message warning that it would be closing soon. The following message was stated:

We will be closing the Xbox 360 Game Store over the next year, so we recommend that you purchase any 360 games or DLC by May 2023.

Clicking on the link in this message, as reported by this user, will take us to a different message indicating that some Xbox 360 games will be removed, and that is what Microsoft informed us a few days ago.

Microsoft, in turn, announced in a special statement that this alert message was a technical error, as it said Bree AdamsXbox's director of global product marketing told The Verge: This message was posted in error and I can assure you that the Xbox 360 Store will not be closed in May 2023 as stated in the message..

Otherwise, last Tuesday, Microsoft announced a plan to remove several games and related downloadable content from the Xbox 360 Store this month, for which the store's closure was not mentioned outright.

Games scheduled to be removed from the digital store include parts of the Assassin's Creed series, Call of Duty, Dark Souls, Far Cry, Left 4 Dead, Mass Effect, Prince of Persia, Skate, Splinter Cell, and The Witcher.

Microsoft noted that anyone who previously purchased any of these games can always re-download them through the Xbox 360 game downloads list, even after removing them from the store.
